Wilderness therapy takes us on the adventure of a lifetime. Throughout our weeks in the nature of Utah, we engage in activities we might never have seen ourselves doing, from the daily habits of living in the back country to the spontaneous adventures of extreme sports. We learn to make fire, set up camp, and survive. We also learn how to mountain bike, rock climb, hike, and live while we’re undergoing life changing therapy. Each day is a brand new adventure that we learn to thrive in, far away from the distractions and reminders of modern urban life, connected to the elements, and thrust into the present moment.
When we push our boundaries as women, we are rarely disappointed. Since about the beginning of all stories of women, we have been repressed to delicate, fragile, incapable creatures who must be polished and kept in a box of glass like a treasured piece of china. Breaking out of our societally placed and self-placed captivity we often find, we aren’t broken. Even when we have lived in pieces, feeling shattered by our traumas, addictions, or other mental health struggles, we find that when we break free of what has broken us, we aren’t really broken at all. We’re free. We’re strong. We’re whole. We’re resilient. We’re so much more capable than we’ve ever allowed ourselves to be.
Wilderness therapy helps us to learn how to maximize our experiences of life. Our view of the world rapidly expands as does our view of who we are as women. Living in nature puts us on a quest for recovery we’ve never known before. Outside the comforts of traditional treatment center walls, we’re forced to reckon with ourselves and truly meet the conditions of what life gives to us on a daily basis. Like Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, we enter a quest to find ourselves by squeezing every last ounce out of every area of life we can. Recovery gives us a second chance to live. If we take full advantage by all of life’s opportunities, we grow stronger in our relationship to recovery, forever grateful for each next moment.
Women’s recovery programs created by women, run by women, made for women, are key to helping women navigate the many layers of their world both internally and externally. Created with the female experience especially in mind, the RedCliff Recovery program has been designed to help women believe in hope, live in joy, and find the freedom they deserve.
