Who among us has not desired to live a full and healthy life, one filled with meaning and discovery? As humans, there is something innate in all of us that yearns to be who we are, fully and completely.
The naturalist Henry David Thoreau understood this impulse exquisitely. He literally walked the walk when it came to his talk: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
In his time Thoreau was a bit of an innovator, taking to the woods to find meaning, peace and a sense of purpose. Today we know that his instinctual knowledge that nature has the power to heal was spot on.
Research shows that being in a natural environment does amazing things to our bodies and minds. For example, experts have discovered that after a short walk in a park our blood pressure can go down, and our sense of focus can increase.
This is why the therapeutic wilderness program at RedCliff Ascent has made an incredible difference in the lives of those who complete our program.
